Soon to Be Spring Greetings!

We have weathered the storm(s) and have literally dug ourselves out from under the snow. Spring is in our reach. Even if the snow decides to continue to trickle in - Spring is only a few weeks away. It’s time now to get back in the flow !
With the energy of the Olympic games coming to a close perhaps we can take inspiration from the tremendous atheletes who persevere no matter what the obstacle. We all know that a huge part of what helps bring us to greatness is our mental capacity to never give up. Stay connected to your “resolution” or commitment that you have made for yourself this year. We all have set backs and times that challenge our ability to stay dedicated to our personal goals – it’s what we do with these set backs that matters. See below for some March inspiration from us to help us all stay connected as we make this transition through the seasons.

Affordable Pilates Equipment

Karma Yoga
Our hearts to out to the victims of the earthquake in Chile.
In February we were able to raise $500 for the Haiti earthquake and matched over another $500 to donate a total of $1008 to Doctors Without Borders. Thank you to those who participated and donated with either heart or wallet. We know that our donations are going to a good cause. If you wish to make any further donations to Doctors Without Borders for either Haiti or Chile – we are able to take that donation at any time and pass it on.

New Moon and New Year Greetings!
 
It’s a new year and a new moon so the energy that surrounds us now is that of beginning again. What a refreshing feeling to be able to start again. If you could really start anew, what would you wish for yourself?
 
If you attended Maria’s Resolve to Evolve workshop this past weekend, you spent some very sacred time focusing on how you wish to grow. In fact many of our classes in these past few weeks have focused on manifesting our own personal destiny for the new year - some of the most beautiful practices I have ever attended. Many of you have come in to join us in this manifestation the past few weeks whether it was through yoga or Pilates – you’ve been here !
 
When you think about your desires of how you wish to grow or what you manifest for yourself this year and next – think in terms well beyond what you “think” is possible. What would you be or do if you had no constraints of time, money, resources, and even mental or physical strength? Our perception of our constraints is often what binds us. Are our challenges really what we perceive them to be? Try a new perspective and GO BEYOND your personal beliefs of what you think is possible. When you look at your future – what would it look like if those constraints didn’t exist? List everything that is important to you. Some call it their “Mondo Beyondo” list.
 
From a personal perspective that perhaps we all can relate to in some way… As an 8th generation resident of Frederick and having grown up here my entire life, I always had a vision of owning a business in downtown Frederick. About 15 years ago Maria and I began our daydreams of opening a yoga/Pilates studio – Really! At that time, I couldn’t dare to allow myself to see how it would actually come to be because in my mind it wasn’t in my realm of possibility. It remained a dream until maybe 4 to 5 years ago when I decided to put that dream on paper & began writing a business plan. The truth is that in the back of my mind, I always had a vision of having a family & a studio but it never came to fruition until I wrote it down and sat with it. When I look back to 2 years ago at this time when the studio space presented itself to me and I just had my baby boy - I’m in amazement that I actually followed through. Against all odds and hundreds of what felt like very real constraints, here I am with everything that I imagined and more. Thank you also to Maria who helped nudge me along the path, my hubby and baby, and to all of you who have supported every step of the way. May each of you have this sort of support on your path as well.

Beginner Pilates Mat:
If you’ve never been to a Pilates class or don’t feel ready to walk into an all levels class, this class is for you. Learn the foundations & all the beginner Pilates exercises !

Intro to Pilates Equipment:

This class is intended for those who have never been on the Pilates Equipment or very little. Up to 3 students with 1 instructor so you will receive lots of personal attention. Enjoy 3 sessions for only $60. First you will feel the difference, then you’ll see the difference… pretty soon you’ll have a whole new body. See class schedule for available times & to PRE-REGISTER.
 
Restorative Yoga: 
Relax into sheer bliss as you are supported by bolsters, blankets & pillows. Your instructor will guide you through deep states of meditation and visualization. Great for Everybody who needs to Relax and Renew. Please PRE-REGISTER for this class.

Kids Classes:

Finally kids classes are back!! See below for 3 workshops perfect for your kids to gain the benefits of yoga while having fun. Bring your 9-11 year olds on Saturday mornings while you take your own All Levels yoga class. PRE-REGISTRATION required.

Satellite Yoga in Braddock Heights:

Check out our website – we now have a satellite location in Braddock Heights. We now have beginner & Level 1/2 classes on Wednesday nights in the beautiful Braddock Heights Community Center. See website for more info.

6am Yoga for Runners:

Other Changes Coming in 2010
Beginning Jan 1 2010, the cost of our monthly memberships will be increasing an average $10 per month or less (except for the annual membership which will remain the same).  However, our monthly memberships will now include a 10% discount off of all retail. As always, you will also have the option for less expensive monthly memberships by signing up for our 3 and 6 month memberships. Stay tuned for more details to come.

Greetings in the Flow !
 
As Thanksgiving approaches it’s the perfect time to count our blessings. Gratitude is a fundamental part of most transformational and spiritual paths. It has many important health benefits too… including better sleep, fewer physical ailments, and a greater ability to cope with stressful situations. It elevates your soul, energizes your spirit, inspires and transforms you. Practicing gratitude has also been linked to positive mental health. To find our own personal state of bliss, it helps to see how we fit into things bigger than ourselves. Take this time now and/or join us for a special Thanksgiving Day Class (Graciousness from Within – All Levels HOT Yoga) and reflect on all there is in your life to be grateful for.
 
We have a full schedule of 30 classes per week for you to choose from & have added more Hot Classes to the schedule to warm your soul. Other classes will now be kept at a neutral warm temperature (approx 70 – 75 degrees) for those of you not wanting a Hot class.

Fall is in full swing now and it seems as if we could feel it in the air the moment it arrived. Fall is about change and we’re beginning to experience changing leaves, cooler temperatures and a refreshing crisp in the air. As the world changes & evolves around us, may it also inspire an evolution towards balance within.
 
We have a full line up of programs coming this month including: Ayurveda 101 Basics, an in-depth Ayurvedic Detox Retreat & internationally recognized Lorin Roche coming this weekend to help us all delve deeper to explore the depths within. Also – don’t forget our Piltates Equipment Specials to help you find balance from your core out. If you always wanted to try it – now is your chance for 1/2 off !!

 Our Global Mala Celebration in September was powerful as 50-60 of us joined together to practice 108 Sun Salutations on the creek. It was a tremendous gathering of community, love and celebration. You will see a picture of us by the creek on that beautiful sunny day. A sincere thank you to all who contributed bags of dog & cat food that was donated to the local Animal Shelter.

September Greetings !
 
September is National Yoga Month & we have great FREE events this week to celebrate!
Join us this Sunday 9/20 & Monday 9/21 for free yoga AND pilates (See details below)
 
Our teacher (Shiva Rea) is the catalyst behind Global Mala which is a time when the community and the world come together to celebrate the true essence of yoga. This Sunday, yogis & yoginis from all around the world will be practicing yoga together to give back to those in need. Shiva states that Global Mala is an opportunity to connect with the community at large: across all borders, all styles of yoga, all forms of yoga. It falls during Fall Equinox and United Nations International Peace Day. The ritual of practicing 108 sun salutations or 108 of a mantra combines yoga with action by offering the power of that energy toward a greater purpose. Ananda Shala’s Global Mala support will go to the Frederick County Humane Society. Please bring a bag of dry dog or cat food as a donation to this free event. The FCHS is in need of this food for those who can no longer afford to feed their pets. All other donations accepted as well.
 
The celebration doesn’t end there. We will continue our celebration of National Yoga Month on Monday with FREE yoga and pilates all day long. We will have classes from 8am until 8pm. We will also have new student class specials and 25% OFF ALL RETAIL for everyone! Our gift for the remainder of national yoga month. July Newsletter

Summer Greetings !
 
 The summer is in full swing with the warm sun, long days, and energy in the air. Although we are inclined to wanting to stay cool in the summer, sweating is good. The process of sweating has a cleansing energy leaving you feeling renewed and transformed. In yoga – it is said that you should have a bead of sweat down your spine as well as in Pilates. Although it’s great to feel cool – don’t be afraid of a little sweat to feed the soul during summer. It’s the natural process that all creatures go through in a seasonal climate. Summer is a time to get active and shed the stagnation from winter.
 
The Ananda staff has experienced great abundance this past month with tremendous turnout for our Summer Solstice event on the Creek and our 1 year anniversary celebration. Thanks to all who joined us and participated. Both events were beautiful gatherings of friends in the community. Since then our senior teachers have remained busy in the flow. Kristen has returned all juiced up from 3 weeks in Greece w/ Shiva Rea! Maria also just returned from Kripalu w/ Shiva and 15 days w/ Dr Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute in NM. Maria is expanding on her Kripalu Ayurvedic training w/ graduate level training w/ marma therapy (energetic points) and an advanced clinical practicum. We are looking forward to more Ayurvedic workshops w/ Maria to come in the near future!
 
Our summer class schedule remains the same with two exceptions per your request. We have returned to 3 lunchtime classes per week (Tues, Wed & Fri). Lunchtime classes are only $10 or can be used as part of your monthly membership or class card. Also – the friday 7am class has been moved to 6am to allow those who need time to get to work after class. Be sure to check online for the most updated schedule.
 
Lastly – if you’re interested in receiving free yoga/pilates classes in exchange for helping out at the studio, please let us know. We have jobs available for those who want to become a more integral part of something wonderful. Also – we have space for rent for an individual or group of wellness practitioners. Give us a call or stop by!

“om breathe” … In class you will learn how to relax and unwind as well as how to breath in the face of challenge. Yes – you will encounter challenges when you come into a yoga class, just as you will encounter challenges in your daily life. May our mantra be to just breath in and to breath out. It’s wonderful when we meet challenges on the mat. As one of our our beloved senior yoga instructors (Andrew) says. We all have struggles yet somehow we feel we are the only ones. The beautiful thing is that when we are met w/ struggles, it’s just an opportunity for greatness to come through. So embrace the challenges you face on the mat w/ a smile. Breathe through them as your instructor will guide you to do. Soon the challenge begins to dissipate as the true essence of the breath begins to shine through. The idea is to take this feeling with you when you leave your yoga mat and to carry it w/ you throughout your days. We will all have stresses & tensions that will creep up but perhaps we can learn to breath & smile through them instead.

As we come to the last ten days to Summer Solstice we are all in activation, solar rhythms. You can feel it in the air … longer days … a propulsion toward regeneration and renewal. Summer Ayurvedic Tips:

According to Ayurveda, Summer is considered to be, for obvious reasons Pitta, the fire principle, time of year. This is a time where in nature and in our lives where the energy of transformation and renewal are abundant. We reap the rewards of this time of year with fruit, vegetables, trees, and nature that has blossomed and renewed from the cold of Winter and wet, warm of Spring. As temperatures rise and we become more active it is important to maintain balance by eating cooling foods, enjoying activities that offer cooling, calming alternatives to allow the body not overheat and the mind to also stay calm. If you notice yourself becoming more impatient, hostile in the summertime this is due to the fire principle being elevated and a sure sign that it needs to be “cooled off.”

Maria will be off to study with Dr. Lad for 15 days in June and July as part of the Ayurvedic Instituties Summer Advanced Studies program. She will be studying Marma therapy (energetic points) and participating in a 7-day Advanced Clinical Practicum. We look forward to her return and more workshops on the horizon !

Q & A:

How do I breathe in Yoga?

Though there are many ways to breathe in Yoga and for relaxation, the breath practice that is a hallmark of Vinyasa Yoga is the ujayii breath. This is a nostril breathing technique which involves breathing in and out of the nostrils while maintaining active energy in the navel and pevic floor. In this type of breathing your belly does not rise and fall, as this is an active, heating and relaxed breath that allows Yogic practitioners to cultivate heat and energy to burn away impiruties and toxins from the physical body. This is actually the most effective and efficient way for your body to breathe. Try it ! Remind yourself of the breathe and as you are driving walking, etc. focus on full nostril breathing. It will relax you and rejuvenate you at the same time.

Q & A:
What is the meaning of Namaste and Om Shanti ?
The gesture of Namaste, bringing your palms together at your heart’s center is a way of offering sacred greeting to someone. The sanskrit word ‘nama’ means to ‘bow to’, thus making namaste a gesture of bowing to one’s heart as a form of greeting not from the mind but a meeting someone on a soul level. It is a bowing to the soul, the heart and connecting with someone heart to heart. It offers a sense of equanimity and balance as we offer the word and gesture to symbolize the union or meeting.
You will notice that your teacher will often close out class by offering the chant of “om shanti” as a way of blessing and ending class. We end like to this to remind and invoke infinite peace for our selves and the world. The word ’shanti’ translates to peace and you can offer or send peace to others and yourself as we offer the intention and vibration to end class.

Greetings of Green;

Green is a word that has flourished into a multitude of meanings. Today green is a color of celebration for St. Patrick’s Day and for some it signifies living in a sustainable, eco-friendly way, and for most it is just a color. And, of course it is green that will bless our eyes as we transition from winter to spring and vegetation flows all around us.

This month we continue to flow into the next rhythm, cycle of life and celebrate beginning and rebirth. Last weekend, we offered our first yoga retreat of the year and explored living life as sacred renewal. The last weekend of March, marking the official beginning of spring weekend, we welcome Gerhard Schmid back for Kalari Yoga and Audrey Ryan for a donation-concert. Both events not to be missed. Just as there are many colors, Yoga also offers an array of possibilities and so our hope is to give you choices to delight you in ALL ways.

March Spotlight –

Mark your calendar the weekend of march 28 to 29 to learn or review kalari yoga, based on the indian system of martial arts kalaripayattu. He will also be offering special evening classes Monday to Wednesday nights to continue the practice. Learn Kalari Namaskar, specialized exercises to open the spine, stretch the legs and torso, and movement patterns to strengthen and challenge. Taught as a progression series, you can sign up for one or all!

OM RELAX! is the chosen mantra for March.

As we are in a shift and transition time, life can seem hectic and chaotic. To alleviate your mind and calm the nervous system, breath in – breathe out and RELAX. Try it, it works. Try chanting in bed to help you fall asleep. While in class settle into each asana and allow yourself to melt and relax.

Back in September of 2008 we sponsored an event in celebration in of International Day of Peace in an effort to raise funds for the Cambodian’s Children’s Fund. Suzanne Cary, from Annapolis, co-sponsored the event and ended up traveling to Cambodia through this organization to witness first hand how and where these funds support the lives of thousands of children in need. Click her name for details.

Spring Into Ayurveda

As we officially welcome spring this weekend, we are in a shift and change with seasons, allergens and activities. This is the time to begin to spring clean your body and mind – detox time. If this time of year brings you sinus infections, runny noses, sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, and colds then you might want to consider the following Ayurvedic remedies to ease your symptoms. Ayurveda recommends you avoid dairy (creates heaviness and dampness inside the body), do regular neti (nasal saline wash) and nasya (oiling the nasal passages), wake up earlier and add in 10 to 15 minutes of sun salutations to invigorate the body and mind, and most importantly schedule a Spring Cleanse – Detox to release all that has accumulated during the winter months.

Q & A:
How do I know when I am ready to move up to another level in Yoga class?

This question is often asked and pondered yet we feel like we somehow need to “master” our downward dog before we even think of moving any further. But this is not the case. Once you’ve become familiar with the basic flow of namaskars and common standing asanas (poses) then it’s time to challenge and move up the number scale and try a level 1/2 class. The key to moving up to a level 2/3 class is not so much about having an amazing yoga practice, but more about knowing how to modify and adapt as the class offers more complex variations of poses you’ve seen before. And if you are feeling like you are “stuck” in your daily practice we suggest you try other favorites like: pure stretch yoga, slow flow, and ashtanga basics. Feeling like you need an asana tune-up? Check out our yoga alignment class on Wednesday afternoon as this is a great bridge class to allow you to focus and delve deeper in specific asanas. To submit your question email us!
