Greetings in the Flow of Fall!

It has been a very abundant transition into Fall and we thank all of you for your continued dedication. We feel blessed to have the community of support that is so apparent at Ananda Shala. In September we offered free classes in exchange for donations for Kids 4 Congo Kids and are able to donate $450 to that organization. In addition, we have now added free mindfulness meditation every Sunday at 4pm. All donations for this will go directly to the local homeless shelter. Now you have 2 options for free classes on Sunday including yoga or meditation.
We’re overflowing with excitement now to be hosting our favorite – Lorin Roche, PhD (one of the world’s greatest contemporary meditation masters) and his amazingly powerful wife, Camille Maurine. They have written numerous books. If you have ever been interested in meditation and don’t know where to start or how to go deeper, try at least one of their meditation sessions listed below. Explore ways to meditate that will free you on many levels – nothing dry or boring. A perfect way to ground yourself for the Fall.

Grounding into Fall Flow with Ayurveda
By Maria Garre

Offering the world the foundation for all medical systems and healing therapies known today, Ayurveda, the mother of ALL science, originated in India more then 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word derived from Ayur, life and Veda, knowledge translated to mean the “knowledge of life”. Based upon the tri-doshic theory in which all matter, including our bodies, is made up of all five elements, energies (ether, air, fire, water, earth), Ayurveda offers us methods and practices that foster health and longevity for all well-being in simple, basic terms. These elements influence our bodies and the environment in various degrees.
The Fall season is strongly influenced by the air element which represents movement in all directions. This movement brings the attributes of lightness, dryness, coolness, and roughness both in our environment and in our bodies. The heat of summer is slowly absorbed back into the Earth offering the last of Fall harvests rending bright vegetables, fruits and grains in preparation for the cold Winter. All this change and transition may leave you feeling ungrounded, scattered, tired, dry, etc. So to offset these symptoms which is our bodies natural response to the movement of nature all around us, Ayurveda offers a few simple tips to restore harmony and strength to your body:
- Shift from eating raw, light and cold foods to warm, heavier, and moist foods. This will help ground and pacify any digestive issues that may arise during fall season.
- Avoid too many cold drinks and best to not use ice to cool drinks. Drinking warm water is best.
- Use warming spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, dried ginger, black pepper and saffron.
- Avoid nightshades and large beans as they are not best for digestive system during this time.
- Slow down and notice when you are rushing. Stop and breathe! Slow down your Yoga practice and avoid overexerting.
- Establish a good morning routine so that each day begins in a relaxed, meditative way.
- Oil up ! There’s no better time to introduce warm Sesame or Vata Oil massage to your hold body (use ½ cup of oil before you shower).

Ananda Shala Testimonial
Mark Smith
I first experienced the warm, caring instructors at Ananda Shala last November when Iand my wife Susan attended an evening intro class led by Aimee and Kimmer. Wow,what a pair to introduce the practice – I was hooked from that night on! In the intervening ten months I have practiced yoga an average of three to four days a week, with Pilates mat and tower added on to that. Each instructor brings a slightly different perspective to the practice and I have enjoyed spending many classes with Aimee, Dominica, Debbie and Lori, plus many others, of course. The special events around the solstice’s and New Year Day are also a lot of fun in a larger group setting.
I knew as I got a bit older, that despite being in pretty good shape, that I needed the flexibility that yoga would bring as well as the core strength that Pilates would add. And in fact I have noticed a marked difference in my other physical activities especially golf, which is a passion of mine. The two disciplines in combination have me hitting the ball farther with more consistency, lowering my handicap from an 8.5 index to a 6.5 this year. My playing partners call it my new “yoga” swing!
In addition to the physical changes that I expected, what was a bigger surprise was how much I would I would gain by just being a part of the Ananda Shala community. While it has been great to make progress along the yoga journey, just as satisfying has been the people that I have met through the classes, from the instructors to other classmates. It truly is a family of loving, caring individuals – from a wide variety of backgrounds.
As someone who is “temporarily retired” as a residential real estate development lenderfor GMAC I have also appreciated the grace and peace that the practice has brought my life, providing real spiritual support in a period of personal uncertainty as the country struggles with this economy. Susan has also continued on with her practice, although not at the pace that I am able to and she is now a member of the community in a different way as a work study participant. We live in Northern Montgomery County between Hyattstown and Damascus and have two sons, 23 and 26. Other than Yoga I enjoy golf, reading and working in the yard.
