Gratitude from The Shala

image

The Thanksgiving Holiday is here so we would like to express our deepest gratitude from “the shala” and all the radiant energy that surrounds us here. Ananda Shala (your place of bliss) exists because of you. Every day, no matter what seems to bubble up, we always come back to and appreciate the beauty that we experience here on a daily basis; the transformations that have happened for so many; and the friendships and bonds that will never be broken as a result.

Our wish for you is that you carry your own personal blessings with you throughout the holiday. Savor this opportunity to spend quality time with your family/friends and simply give thanks…not just before you sit down for your thanksgiving dinner but let it become a practice- a way to live. There is no easier way to meditate or pray than to take a moment of gratitude.

Join us on Thanksgiving Day for a special class with Kristen at 9:30AM – Full of Gratitude Yoga for All Levels: A Thanksgiving Celebration!! Also, notice our schedule changes for Thursday and Friday!

Many Many Blessings,

Aimee and The Ananda Shala Tribe

Harmonize and Winterize: Ayurveda and Winter
By Maria Garre

Embracing the darkest nights of the year as we feel the next seasonal cycle upon us … are all your cells adapting to change?

The Winter Solstice marks the apex of our relationship to the sun and moon. The junction between December 21 and June 21 is marked by less sunlight and more moonlight. According to Ayurveda this cosmic shift can have profound influences within our body and mind.

All of our bodily rhythms, functions and actions are sensing the earth shifting in relations to light, temperature and environment. This time of year according to Ayurveda is full of movement, change, shift
and transition. As an outcome, of the latter we
can often find ourselves out of routine, confused and ungrounded.

And, this is expected!

Expound the the great sages of Ayurveda as it is normal for our body and mind to be carried away by themobile, dry, cold, and light qualities of the Fall season. Thesegunas influence the prevalence of harmony within the flow of life. There are times when certain gunas may become elevated for one reason or another. Add the introduction of Winter on the horizon offering heavy, cold, liquid (wet), dull qualities and we have much to negotiate in this transition of Seasons+.

Do not despair, Ayurveda offers simple recommendations to help bring balance and clarity to all of you and navigate the change in season with flow and grace.

Here are some simple tips to commit

1. keep favoring moist, warm, hearty or light soups and stews.
2. avoid heavy proteins after 2 pm.

3. drink warm water or CCF Tea (cumin, corriander, fennel)
4. abhyanga at least 4X a week. This is a delicious self-oil massage treatment.
5. stay active and take daily walks preferably in the morning.
6. rise before the sun and enjoy the quite of the morning darkness and find lightness in the space.

In the holiday spirit of giving, Ananda Shala will be hosting a fundraiser on December 4th in efforts to raise money for the Jangriti School located in Rishikesh, India. There will be a donation based yoga class, taught by Maria Garre, from 5:30PM – 6:30PM, with a silent auction happening directly after the class.

Jangriti is merely a year old, yet is already supporting over 60 poor and underprivileged children. This past year, Maria led a retreat to Rishikesh where the group visited the school and met with the students, giving them school supplies. After visiting with the children Maria pledged to bring back resources (her old laptop), supplies, and money to help keep the project alive. This inspired her to have a fundraiser for Jangriti. The money raised by the fundraiser will be the first outside donation received by the school.

Both the donation class and the silent auction are open to the public. The silent auction will offer items such as gift baskets, wine, jewelry, artwork, and children’s gifts. This is a great opportunity to find items for Holiday gifts while supporting a great cause. The donation class is a $10 minimum, and pre-registration is recommended. Registration is available on Ananda Shala’s website. If you would like more information about the event, or are interested in donating items to the silent auction, please contact Emma Lewis at emma.lewismallow@yahoo.com.

Monetary donations are also being accepted for the school.

1. How long have you been practicing yoga or pilates, and what inspired you to become a teacher?

I have been practicing yoga for about 8 years. First for a workout, then realizing all of the other benefits of a steady practice. It brought me so much joy I wanted to give that to others. Teaching yoga was an easy choice.

2. Where did you study to become a yoga or pilates teacher and what additional training have you received?

I started teaching with a few weekends of YogaFit. Then I earned my RYT 200 with Maria Garre as a Prana Flow teacher here at Ananda Shala and I continue to learn as much as I can. There is so much to learn and I love it!

3. What do you like to do with your time off the mat?

My husband Matt and 8yr old James keep me busy. We like to get out side and hike or bike. Between being a mom a wife and a teacher, I love to play music, sing as loud as I can and run as far as I can.

4. What do you want your students to take away from your class? How were you influenced as a student by one of your teachers?

I want anyone who comes to take my class to leave feeling better than they did before. To realize that there is a connection between your outer physical self and your inner self is like having a birthday every day. That is why I try to give that realization to my students.

Ananda Shala Testimonial

Natalie Sheets,
Ananda Shala Newsletter Editor

Last winter, I felt an incredible need to question what I was doing in life. I was working a desk job that was completely unfulfilling and lacking in any type of personal gain. It was at this time that I restarted my yoga practice to help me through the days. I began at Ananda Shala during the Blizzard of 2010 with my Intro 2 week unlimited. I took classes almost every day (except for the days when there was too much snow!) and have never stopped coming.

I had taken many styles of yoga and attended many studios before Ananda Shala. However, after my first class I instantly felt connected to Prana Flow® Yoga in a way that was simply magical. I remember savasana with Dominica during my first class, and was so overwhelmed with the beauty of her voice and spirit in the room. I still get this feeling today, with instructors like Aimee McBride, Maria Garre, Dominica Knapp, Kimmer Roberts, and all the other amazing instructors!! And I have recently began my pilates practice with Amy Hatzis, which is truly improving my yoga!

My practice, and the amazing teachers and students at Ananda Shala gave me the push to quit my job and start my yoga journey. Not only have I deepened my yoga practice, but I now have 2 amazing jobs, one with Ananda Shala as Front Desk Staff/Newsletter Editor, but also with Shiva Rea’s Samudra Yogadventures (Thanks to Aimee McBride and Maria Garre!!)I absolutely love what I do I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of everyone at Ananda Shala. And the great thing about The Shala is that it doesn’t stop with just the teachers, I have made some amazing friends with other practitioners, and love seeing everyone weekly (if not daily!!)

This past year has seriously been the most amazing year of my life, I got married to my high school sweetheart, continued to build relationships with everyone at the studio, and have finally begun my 200 hr teacher training certification with Maria Garre! I can’t wait to step on the mat for the first time as a teacher.

Maria Garre Teaching at the Vancouver Conference earlier this month

I am learning that all of life is a relationship, cultivating a relationship with ourselves and the world. This simple teaching rooted within Yogic scriptures is both simple and profound at the same time. Through our hurried lives, we often forget the power of interactions and experiences that shape our thoughts, physical body and energetic being. We hit auto pilot as soon as we rise from bed and move through life in a perfunctory way, disconnected from the very moment that we are in. But then there are the moments of pause and stillness an we remember that each breath offers a new way of interacting, observing. And perhaps it is why many of you love Yoga and are do drawn to this practice because it renews your relationship with yourself and others !

This month, Lorin Roche offered us vibrant and dynamic ways to meditate upon our life and literally see, feel the joy of life. In 14 days we are hosting our teacher, Shiva Rea, for what I consider the best way to realize the integrity of relationships through Rasa, the taste and juice of life. She will be offering various practices and teacher training that merge yogic teachings to every day applications that will spark your inner peace, fire, love and bliss. And lastly, this month I hope to see all of you as I return back from my studies in Albuquerque at the Ayurvedic Institute for special Prana Flow® classes to energize and balance your flow on and off the mat!

Allow yourself to reflect and ponder the possibilities of approaching each day as relationship with yourself and the world.
Blessings from All Directions

TEMPLE OF RASA WITH SHIVA REA
Nov 12 and Nov 13

imagePublic classes offerings and teacher training!!!!

Experience transformative Prana Flow® sessions with Shiva Rea, vinyasa pioneer and creative founder, and Prana Flow® collective teachers. On this East Coast Fall Mandala tour, we will connect with the amazing yoga studios offering Prana Flow® on the East Coast with the great communities that are part of those studios.

Temple of Rasa will explore full-spectrum approach to living yoga with energetic alchemy. We come into balance through understanding the wild and sublime flow of nature or the movement of prana.

In each class we will explore and meditate upon:

  • How do we evolve and become more of who we are? How do we transform habits and conditioned responses to life? How can we align ourselves with the sacred flow of our personal and collective evolution?
  • Learning how to stay in the flow of everyday life. Understand how we flow like nature – that we change with the seasons, the phases of moon, the energy level of our body and the bhava or mood of time of day.
  • Attune ourselves to the sacred flow of our breath, consciousness, devotion, spontaneous wisdom, creativity and truth in every moment.

In the last few years, there has been a shift in consciousness based upon the wisdom of experience. Never before has the capacity to change and the capacity to remain centered ever been so tested often resulting in a conflict between the two. The capacity of dancing with change while being rooted in your center is the key to living fully in the flow.

Lorin Roche and Camille Maurine Testimonial

image
Aimee Firor McBride, photo by Jenay Martin

The meditation weekend with Lorin Roche PhD & Camille Maurine was mind altering for me in the sense that it has expanded the way that I see, hear, feel and think. A weekend with this pair is like a massage for the mind! The way that Lorin & Camille are able to translate their 90 years of combined meditation experience in a form that is accessible to everyone in every day life was so powerful to all who attended.

The two of them played off of each other, shared funny stories of Lorin’s extensive studies with Indian meditation masters and boiled it all down into simplicity. We interacted as a group, explored our personal experiences and were able to ask all our burning questions in the most positive and supportive environment imaginable. The experience, insight and knowledge we received will honestly forever change many of our lives. We are so blessed to have teachers of this magnitude coming to share such authentic knowledge from living and breathing their meditation for so many years and sharing it with us in a manner that isn’t intimidating in any way.

They dramatically broadened my perspective on meditation from what I have experienced in the past and have read in texts – something I didn’t expect but a very welcome perspective. Now I crave, desire and love my personal meditation space more than I could have dreamed. This was one of the most transformative weekends of my life as it has not only brightened my personal spirit but has strengthened my relationship with everybody and everything that surrounds me and I hold close to my heart. Many thanks and gratitude for the blessings of such a powerful weekend.

As I reflect upon what I consider to be the most epic trip of a lifetime, I am filled with awe and inspiration to find the sacred in every day living.
Puja at Tungnath Temple-Garwal Himalayas

As ten yogis and yoginis trekked to the holy glacier where the sacred river Ganges begins, each of us was brought together for different reasons, but we were all united in our devotion to find and know something deeper within ourselves. Some were Yoga teachers, some students and others just seekers on the path, but all of us bonded in ways that are impossible in every day living. As the journey began in Rishikesh taking us deeper into the Himalayan range navigating narrow roads with the Ganga valley on one side and the mountains to the other, we were eager in anticipation and contemplation. We all learned that life is a journey literally and figuratively and that one can practice lot of Yoga on the mat, but the art of living Yoga – that is called living a full life and vibrant life.

This month, I challenge each of you on the path to find the art of living Yoga and that is often paired with challenges, struggles and lots of trust. This month you have the perfect opportunity to go beyond what you think is possible and delve deeper into one of the most stimulating yogic texts of all times – the Vijnanabhairava Tantra as translated by Lorin Roche. Lorin is one of the most dynamic teachers I have personally met and if you’ve not booked to study with him-you must ……. he is NOT to be missed ! This is a gathering not to miss as you will be guided down the tantric path to meditation by one of the greatest contemporary meditation masters. Enjoy Lorin’s insights, thoughts and stories on meditation inspired by his many years of exploring, experiencing and teaching meditation.

During The Radiance Sutras portions of the weekend, we explore Lorin’s fresh translation of the ancient yoga text, the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra. Shiva Rea describes The Radiance Sutras as her favorite text of all time. “Yoga is a living tradition. Lorin is on the front lines as a meditation teacher, a champion of natural meditation, of awakening consciousness everywhere, in all places, in all times. He is bringing over into the Western world the deepest teachings of Tantra, giving them voice to sing out clearly.”

Here is what Kristen Townsend had to say about Lorin Roche:

“Lorin is both a spirited teacher and energetic healer. He guides students to a state of meditation that isn’t foreign or scary, but is their most authentic, grounded states of being. Lorin teaches sublime, ecstatic meditations that actually arise from the students, and offers practicality for integrating the power that these meditations offer, into daily life rhythms.

Through our professional relations, I’ve had the fortune of developing a personal relationship with Lorin, and greatly cherish our time together. He is funny, witty, and always has a fresh perspective. Lorin really connects when he’s talking with someone, and his intuition and deeper levels of perception have often had me asking, “how did you know that?!” A weekend learning with Lorin and his goddess wife Camille is definitely not something to miss!”

Module Feedback from our Students

imageLast weekend Ananda Shala had the pleasure of hosting Andrew McAuley’s Applied Anatomy and Massage for Flow module for our 300 hour program. Here is what Lynne Valdes, a recent Ananda Shala 200 hr Prana Flow® graduate, had to say:

“Andrew’s workshop was an amazing experience for me! He made the anatomy come alive as he taught creatively and compassionately. Andrew took a subject that many of us struggle with and empowered us to feel it within our own bodies and gain the confidence to observe it others. He took the fear out of touch so that we could harness its healing power to better serve our students and we discovered how our language when cueing can be a vehicle for transformation. I am extremely grateful to have Andrew on my journey as both a servant and a student of the flow.”

Flow with Ayurveda

By Maria Garre

Offering the world the foundation for all medical systems and healing therapies known today, Ayurveda, the mother of ALL science, originated in India more then 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word derived from Ayur, life and Veda, knowledge translated to mean the “knowledge of life”. Based upon the tri-doshic theory in which all matter, including our bodies, is made up of all five elements, energies (ether, air, fire, water, earth), Ayurveda offers us methods and practices that foster health and longevity for all well-being in simple, basic terms. These elements influence our bodies and the environment in various degrees.

The Fall season is strongly influenced by the air element which represents movement in all directions. This movement brings the attributes of lightness, dryness, coolness, and roughness both in our environment and in our bodies. The heat of summer is slowly absorbed back into the Earth offering the last of Fall harvests rending bright vegetables, fruits and grains in preparation for the cold Winter. All this change and transition may leave you feeling ungrounded, scattered, tired, dry, etc. So to offset these symptoms which is our bodies natural response to the movement of nature all around us, Ayurveda offers a few simple tips to restore harmony and strength to your body:

  1. Shift from eating raw, light and cold foods to warm, heavier, and moist foods. This will help ground and pacify any digestive issues that may arise during fall season.
  2. Avoid too many cold drinks and best to not use ice to cool drinks. Drinking warm water is best.
  3. Use warming spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, dried ginger, black pepper and saffron.
  4. Avoid nightshades and large beans as they are not best for digestive system during this time.
  5. Slow down and notice when you are rushing. Stop and breathe! Slow down your Yoga practice and avoid overexerting.
  6. Establish a good morning routine so that each day begins in a relaxed, meditative way.
  7. Oil up ! There’s no better time to introduce warm Sesame or Vata Oil massage to your hold body (use ½ cup of oil before you shower).

Ananda Shala Testimonial

image Mark Smith

I first experienced the warm, caring instructors at Ananda Shala last November when Iand my wife Susan attended an evening intro class led by Aimee and Kimmer. Wow,what a pair to introduce the practice – I was hooked from that night on! In the intervening ten months I have practiced yoga an average of three to four days a week, with Pilates mat and tower added on to that. Each instructor brings a slightly different perspective to the practice and I have enjoyed spending many classes with Aimee, Dominica, Debbie and Lori, plus many others, of course. The special events around the solstice’s and New Year Day are also a lot of fun in a larger group setting.

I knew as I got a bit older, that despite being in pretty good shape, that I needed the flexibility that yoga would bring as well as the core strength that Pilates would add. And in fact I have noticed a marked difference in my other physical activities especially golf, which is a passion of mine. The two disciplines in combination have me hitting the ball farther with more consistency, lowering my handicap from an 8.5 index to a 6.5 this year. My playing partners call it my new “yoga” swing!

In addition to the physical changes that I expected, what was a bigger surprise was how much I would I would gain by just being a part of the Ananda Shala community. While it has been great to make progress along the yoga journey, just as satisfying has been the people that I have met through the classes, from the instructors to other classmates. It truly is a family of loving, caring individuals – from a wide variety of backgrounds.

As someone who is “temporarily retired” as a residential real estate development lenderfor GMAC I have also appreciated the grace and peace that the practice has brought my life, providing real spiritual support in a period of personal uncertainty as the country struggles with this economy. Susan has also continued on with her practice, although not at the pace that I am able to and she is now a member of the community in a different way as a work study participant. We live in Northern Montgomery County between Hyattstown and Damascus and have two sons, 23 and 26. Other than Yoga I enjoy golf, reading and working in the yard.

September Instructor Focus: Sandy Morrell

How long have you been practicing yoga or pilates, and what inspired you to become a teacher?

In 2002, I started taking yoga as a way to stay fit while trying to keep up with my active toddler twin daughters. It absolutely sang to me. I wanted my husband and children to have yoga and then I wanted the whole world to have yoga! I have been inspired by friends and a community that strives to be healthy. I think my true inspiration has come from the students, people as eager to embrace yoga as I am.

Where did you study to become a yoga or pilates teacher and what additional training have you received?

I took one weekend module with Yogafit before I started teaching at the rec center in 2007. In July 2009 I received my RYT200 from Maria’s Prana Flow Training and most recently completed Doreen Helm’s YogaBugs training for kids. I love every kind of yoga and look forward to many years of study. Each class I teach is a training on its own and I am excited to be teaching two 3′s and 4′s kid classes, as well as, 2 gentle classes now at Ananda Shala

What do you like to do with your time off the mat?

I am passionate about giving kids a healthy world in which to grow up. I believe that starts with respect for the individual body, and the global world around. I help run the Green Team at my daughters’ elementary school. We recycle, make posters to spread the word, plan and plant a garden, talk about nutrition, and educate parents on how we can all do a better job.

Aside from watching my children grow (up too fast), my absolute favorite thing to do is watch my self-taught husband play guitar in “The Jug Band”. They are excited to play on the creek for In the Street, Sept. 11th.

What do you want your students to take away from your class? How were you influenced as a student by one of your teachers?

I would love if my students went away with a deeper sense and respect for their amazing humanness and all that goes with that…connections to the Earth, inner body, spirit, each other… And that true relaxation, peace and meditation are possibilities.

I have had many yogic influences and my teachers have come in many different forms and from many different places, innumerable and each one valuable and necessary.

Namaskaram from India!

image
As I look over the Himalayas, the birthplace of Yoga, I am humbled and reminded that the art of living Yoga is to surrender to each present moment as it presents itself. I know of no other land that offers vibrant daily teachings of patience, humility, abundance in ALL forms and unwavering Spirituality. This practice we’ve all come to love, known as Yoga, was birthed here in the Himalayas and taught by the great Rishis, Sages for all of humanity to experience and know. And many of you, like me, have experienced the depth and power of these practices so profoundly that you seek to learn and know more. Thus, it is with deep reverence that Ananda Shala offers these teacher’s studies and programs to offer you the best educational resources and teachers to advance your knowledge and love of Yoga. Whether you simply want to dive deeper or hope to teach others.

Any and all of our programs are open to you as a source of authentic knowledge. As a long-time resident of Frederick, I am thrilled beyond words to make available what was not available to me when my journey began over 10 years ago. Ananda Shala is blessed to be the first in offering you a chance to study with world-renowned teachers, offer a nationally recognized teacher’s certification program, and be one of the few Yoga studios in the tri-state area to offer a full 500-hour certification program!

So dive in, immerse and transform.

This is a gathering not to miss as you will be guided down the tantric path to meditation by one of the greatest contemporary meditation masters. Enjoy Lorin’s insights, thoughts and stories on meditation inspired by his many years of exploring, experiencing and teaching meditation..

JULY 2010 NEWSLETTER

Greetings !

You may notice that we are incorporating more fluid, watery movements into our yoga practicesthis summer including moving in a mandala (circle) around the mat,a signature of Shiva Rea’s Prana Flow® yoga. As we are a Prana Flow® affiliate studio we always encourage and invite ways of connecting and releasing in the flow
but you may notice us even more fluid practices now that we are in the heat of the summer. This doesn’t mean that your practice is any less challenging but it is a tremendous way to counter the heating and drying effects of the 100 degree days of summer.

What exactly is Prana Flow® Yoga and how is it different from other forms of vinyasa yoga?

Prana – “life force creation”

Flow – the state of unified consciousness

Prana Flow® is an energetic, creative, full-spectrum approach to embodying the flow of yoga created by Shiva Rea. Students of all levels are empowered to experience prana – the universal source of breath, life energy and conscious intelligence as the navigating source of yoga practice and vital living.
Summer is about letting go & freedom as we break away from our normal routines. Want even more freedom & fun in your practice? Try Kristen’s Yoga Groove Class on Friday’s 5:30 pm!

July Instructor Focus: Kristen Townsend

Photograph by Jenay Martin

How long have you been practicing yoga or pilates, and what inspired you to become a teacher?

I began yoga as a freshman in college as part of a “stress management” unit in a health class. As an injured figure skater at the time, yoga was the most refreshing experience I had had in conditioning my body in months. The full-spectrum healing that yoga offered inspired me to want to share this amazing practice with everyone. While my own transformational experience with yoga fueled my eagerness to learn, I was also really blessed with the opportunity to learn from some amazing teachers who are strong, powerful women and positive role models within their communities, and they inspire me to continue my own journey as a yoga teacher, fire-tender and wave-rider.

Where did you study to become a yoga or pilates teacher and what additional training have you received?

My training in teaching yoga has come through Shiva Rea’s Samudra Global School for Living Yoga and through the mentorship of Prana Flow® senior teacher Maria Garre.

What do you like to do with your time off the mat?

Time off the mat is dedicated to serving the shakti and raising the collective vibration by my “behind the scenes” assistance to global yogini and sacred activist Shiva Rea; studying the amazing lives of honey bees; and teaching figure skating.

What do you want your students to take away from you class? How were you influenced as a student by one of your teachers?

I hope to offer anyone who comes to my class a sense of inner balance, clarity, strength and compassion, as well as practical physical strength and flexibility to serve their lives. I cannot justifiably attribute my knowledge or understanding or influence to a single teacher. I can say that from them collectively, I’ve come to understand full-spectrum living, the power of presence, and the transformation that happens by living love.

Soon to Be Spring Greetings!

We have weathered the storm(s) and have literally dug ourselves out from under the snow. Spring is in our reach. Even if the snow decides to continue to trickle in - Spring is only a few weeks away. It’s time now to get back in the flow !
With the energy of the Olympic games coming to a close perhaps we can take inspiration from the tremendous atheletes who persevere no matter what the obstacle. We all know that a huge part of what helps bring us to greatness is our mental capacity to never give up. Stay connected to your “resolution” or commitment that you have made for yourself this year. We all have set backs and times that challenge our ability to stay dedicated to our personal goals – it’s what we do with these set backs that matters. See below for some March inspiration from us to help us all stay connected as we make this transition through the seasons.

“WILD GEESE”
by Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

It’s a new year and a new moon so the energy that surrounds us now is that of beginning again. What a refreshing feeling to be able to start again. If you could really start anew, what would you wish for yourself?

If you attended Maria’s Resolve to Evolve workshop this past weekend, you spent some very sacred time focusing on how you wish to grow. In fact many of our classes in these past few weeks have focused on manifesting our own personal destiny for the new year - some of the most beautiful practices I have ever attended. Many of you have come in to join us in this manifestation the past few weeks whether it was through yoga or Pilates – you’ve been here !

When you think about your desires of how you wish to grow or what you manifest for yourself this year and next – think in terms well beyond what you “think” is possible. What would you be or do if you had no constraints of time, money, resources, and even mental or physical strength? Our perception of our constraints is often what binds us. Are our challenges really what we perceive them to be? Try a new perspective and GO BEYOND your personal beliefs of what you think is possible. When you look at your future – what would it look like if those constraints didn’t exist? List everything that is important to you. Some call it their “Mondo Beyondo” list.

From a personal perspective that perhaps we all can relate to in some way… As an 8th generation resident of Frederick and having grown up here my entire life, I always had a vision of owning a business in downtown Frederick. About 15 years ago Maria and I began our daydreams of opening a yoga/Pilates studio – Really! At that time, I couldn’t dare to allow myself to see how it would actually come to be because in my mind it wasn’t in my realm of possibility. It remained a dream until maybe 4 to 5 years ago when I decided to put that dream on paper & began writing a business plan. The truth is that in the back of my mind, I always had a vision of having a family & a studio but it never came to fruition until I wrote it down and sat with it. When I look back to 2 years ago at this time when the studio space presented itself to me and I just had my baby boy - I’m in amazement that I actually followed through. Against all odds and hundreds of what felt like very real constraints, here I am with everything that I imagined and more. Thank you also to Maria who helped nudge me along the path, my hubby and baby, and to all of you who have supported every step of the way. May each of you have this sort of support on your path as well.

Infinite Blessings,
~Aimee & The Tribe at Ananda

The Yoga of Nutrition – An Ayurvedic Approach with Maria Garre

Dates: Tue   2/9/2010

Time:  6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

COST: $35
Food is medicine and medicine is food ! Linking body, breath and nutrition, Ayurveda offers a simple and holistic approach to eating, cooking, drinking and menu planning.
Agni, our digestive fire, is a central theme in Ayurvedic nutrition. Our ability to digest foods and emotions is a critical aspect of maintaining health and vitality. Strong Agni affords us the ability to digest, absorb and assimilate food and nutrients receiving maximum benefit of what we ingest. Weak agni shows up as constipation, indigestion, malabsorption, skin break out, acid reflux and much more. Food is medicine and spices are the sparks of that medicine so that we can heal through food.
Learn about your digestive process, food combinations that work and don’t work, spices and nourishing recipes. Understand why and how food/spices can heal or harm depending upon person, season, and time of day.
